It may have been the final which had Paris stifling a yawn, but women's tennis must hope that Svetlana Kuznetsova's trouncing of her Russian compatriot Dinara Safina in the French Open final can still prove something of a blessing for the game.
Her sport is crying out for what Justine Henin has called a “new boss”, somebody with the accomplished all-round game and a winning personality to impose herself, and after a career which has often identified her as a nearly woman, Kuznetsova demonstrated here, with an emphatic 6-4 6-2 triumph, that she is a serious candidate for the role.
This time she was exceptional, her all-court coverage and superior athleticism leaving all the question marks to hang instead over her friend, world number one Safina.
